Custom designs
Custom furniture can offer the perfect solution for your business, but it requires a little more effort than of the shelf furniture. To help you get a better feel for what you can expect we’ll explain the usual steps associated with custom furniture projects below. The duration of each stage is dependent on a couple of factors, including among other things the complexity and scope of the custom work, the availability of materials and production processes required (and the time needed to gather quotes from certain suppliers). If you want to make sure everything goes as quickly as possible, you can help by providing concreet information about:
- What problem it should solve for you, for example: Increase the experienced property value and help staff to work more efficient.
- Or what you need the product to do, for example: The furniture must be rugged and easy to clean.
- How you prioritize your requirements, for example: Firstly it needs to be comfortable, secondly it must be suitable for seaside use, thirdly I would like it to be easy movable for when I have a beach event.
- Communicate your timeframe, For example: If you need your furniture in short notice, we can focus directly on readily available materials in stead of spending time exploring all options.
- And last but not least, communicate your budget. The sooner we know your available budget, the better we can offer solutions that suit your budget and don’t have to waste your time providing unsuitable options. If you have a single budget for multiple pieces or projects, we can advise how to get the best returns. Not everything requires a custom solution, let’s be smart about it and focus on where it does matter and make the things that actually help you boost your business.
Custom project process
Commonly with custom work we go through the stages below. As mentioned the time spend in each, depends greatly on the project. We’ve done it within a week, but sometimes it takes to six months to fine tune all designs, functional aspects and production. On our documents we communicate about the current stage of the project, you can learn more about it here.
- Establish requirements and budget. In this first stage we identify your needs and budget to start the design process and make sure we can measure if the product meets the correct requirements in later stages.
- Design iterations. We start designing and explore possibilities. See what could work and get a feel for size, shapes, colors construction, mechanics and materials. It is very important to get your feedback in this stage, as it is still easy to change designs and go in another direction. All these designs are still tentative, as the design still needs to be prepared for actual production.
- Estimation of costs and delivery. Once we have decided upon the solution, we’ll provide an initial estimate of the costs.
- Production planning. Once everybody is in agreement about the design and estimated costs, we’ll start on converting the design for production. It means every part needs to be worked out in detail, definitive sizes, shapes, materials, connections are chosen and production processes are worked out. In this stage we’ll also gather detailed estimates on production hours, materials and equipment needed, and estimates from our suppliers.
- Expected costs and downpayment. Based on the latest information we’ll offer you a financial overview with the costs and provide a pro forma invoice.
- Production. Once the downpayment is received and all is in order, production starts.
- Delivery and/or installation. When everything is ready you can pick up the product(s) or we make arrangements for delivery or installation.
- Full payment. When all is in order you’ll receive the final invoice for full payment.
Document explainer
A. Document type. States what kind of information you will find in this document. This could be a Design overview, Quotation, Invoice, or other type of document.
B. Product or project name.
C. Some additional information about the product or project. This could be the main goals for the product to solve, the main requirements or something else to give some additional information.
D. Document name, consisting of the version date and the abbreviated document type.
E. Identifier. Identifies Client-Project/Product-Design version. In this example KUN is the client identifier, 2212EXP is the project identifier and A is the version identifier. For each new design iteration a new versionletter will be assigned to keep track of the specific design version in communication. In this example this design would be referred to as Example product, version A.
F. Progress bar. The color identifies the type of document, where Yellow is associated with designs, Blue with financial documents, such as invoices and quotations, Green with general documents and Red with documents that need special or immediate attention.
With projects you can also find here to what fase of the project this document belongs. In the example below the document is in the stage of Design interations. Below you can find more information about the stages.
